Tigers Take Down Pirates in Four Sets
Oct. 19, 2012
The Tigers (8-16, 3-6 C-USA) scored the first three points of the match behind the service of Veronica Zimmerman. Katie Meyer and Altrese Hawkins teamed up for a block to start the match, and Marija Jovanovic ended the spurt with a kill. The Pirates (1-19, 0-9 C-USA) came back to even the set at six before Memphis scored three straight points, capped by a Viktorija Teivane ace. Following a Pirate point, the Tigers began to take control of the set behind a 4-0 run. Lauren Hawkins and Altrese Hawkins recorded consecutive kills, and Meyer put the Tigers up 13-7 with a kill. Jovanovic gave the Tigers their largest lead of the set, 16-8 with one over her 10 kills in the match. Memphis then held the lead before Zimmerman recorded a kill to give the Tigers the 25-18 first set victory. The Tigers hit .394, 17 kills against four errors on 33 attempts in the first set.
The second set was also tied at six before Memphis started to take control of the frame. The Tigers scored eight of the next 10 point to gain a 14-8 advantage. Meyer and Altrese Hawkins started the spurt with a block before Hawkins and Jovanovic recorded back-to-back kills. Maja Kostic ended the run with her only ace of the match. The Tigers then led 24-20 before East Carolina tried to comeback with consecutive points. However, Hawkins hammed down back-to-back kills, giving Memphis the set 25-22 and a 2-0 lead going into the 10 minute intermission.
It wouldn't be easy for Memphis, however, as the Pirates came out of the break with a vengeance. East Carolina quickly gained a 5-1 advantage, forcing a Memphis timeout. The timeout didn't slow down the Pirate offense as they went on a 5-2 run to open up a 10-3 lead. The Tiger deficit grew to as many as eight points before they started to come back. Memphis got within one point twice, first at 21-20 on a Meyer kill, and again at 23-22 on an Altrese Hawkins kill. However, the Pirates scored the last two points to take the set 25-22.
The fourth set was played tight early on before Altrese Hawkins sparked a quick 3-0 run. Kostic and Lauren Hawkins followed with kills to complete the spurt. Memphis stretched their lead to 17-13 following a Meyer kill to force a Pirate timeout, and Jovanovic extended the lead to five with a kill out of the break. Meyer gave the Tigers a chance at match point with her career-high 12th kill of the match, and Jaden Louie gave Memphis the 25-19 win with her only kill of the night.
Altrese Hawkins led four Tigers in double figures in kills with 18 to go along with 13 digs for her 14th double-double of the season. She also recorded a season-best .438 attack percentage. Meyer posted an attack percentage of .500 with those 12 kills against two errors on 20 attempts. Lauren Hawkins and Jovanovic rounded out the group with 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Teivane matched a career-high with 18 digs while Aleksandra Petronijevic also registered 18 digs in the win. Zimmerman dished out 28 assists, and Louie handed out 26 helpers.
Memphis will be in action again on Sunday when they take on Marshall University. First serve from Huntington, W.Va. is set for 12:00 p.m. (CT).
