OXFORD, Miss. - The University of Memphis (8-16, 1-8) volleyball team fell to
the University of Mississippi, 3-1, despite overpowering Ole Miss to the
tune of 15-1 in game three and 16 kills from junior April Harriman.
The Tigers came out of the blocks focused on upending the Rebels, but were
met with an offense which hit .406, while the Tiger offense hit just .075 in
a 15-8 loss. The Tiger hitting percentage (.083) improved just slightly in a
15-10 second game loss.
Again the break was a blessing for Memphis. The Tigers came out aggressive
at the net and backing up their blockers with a .318 hitting percentage,
downing 15 kills while allowing just one Ole Miss swing to hit the floor.
Sophomore Amie Hamilton again led the Tiger defense with 10 digs, her 14th
match in the double-digits, while senior Amy Vaughn had nine digs.
But the offensive momentum that the Rebels lost in game three swung back in
game four, as Ole Miss hit .270 in a 15-7 fourth game victory to take the
match.
Senior Rosie Glenn downed 11 kills in the loss and is just 49 kills shy of
the 1,000 career kill plateau. Glenn added eight digs while freshman Amanda
Boatright had her second big night at the net, leading the Tigers with eight
total blocks (one solo). Freshman setter Jeannie Robison had three service
aces and four block assists in the loss.
The Tigers next match is a home contest against Conference USA foe Saint
Louis. The Billikens will come to town Friday for a 7 p.m. match-up.
