MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The University of Memphis women's volleyball team (8-18,
1-10) held on to win the opening game 16-14 after losing a 9-0 lead, but
couldn't hold on to the match, losing 3-1 to Murray State (13-8),
Tuesday.
Memphis came out swinging, finishing game one with 64 attacks and 21
kills (.234 hitting percentage). Senior outside hitter Rosie Glenn had
seven kills in the first game, finishing with 14 for the evening.
The second game marked a swing in the momentum, as the Racers took over
offensively, hitting .200 while Memphis hit negative (-.024). Murray
State took the second game 15-7 and Memphis could not recover once
Murray State sophomore outside hitter Audrey Nelson stepped up. Nelson
downed 10 of her 15 kills in game three, to guide the Racers to a 15-8
win.
Game four was another battle won by Murray State, 15-9. Three Racers
finished with 17 kills (Jessica Wood, Nelson, Rachel Kulp) while
freshman Chrissy Dabbert had 40 assists. Senior Sarah Ernst finished
with 14 kills in the Racers' 13th win of the season.
The Tigers were guided by co-captains Glenn and Ginger Garrett. Garrett
led the U of M with 16 kills, while Glenn finished with 14. Sophomore
Sarah Wengler and freshman Amanda Boatright each added nine kills in the
Tigers' fifth consecutive loss. Freshman setter Jeannie Robison had 53
assists in the loss.
Next up for the Tigers is Conference USA foe Houston. Houston downed
the Tigers in the first meeting between the two this season at Houston,
3-0. The Cougars come to town at 7 p.m., Friday, with South Florida
trailing into Memphis at 2 p.m., Sunday.
