ORLANDO – The Memphis volleyball team completed the first half of the conference season Sunday afternoon with a road contest against the UCF Knights. The Tigers rebounded from a quick start from the Knights, but eventually fell 3-1 (25-7, 25-10, 23-25, 25-19).
The Knights took the first two sets 25-7 and 25-10, jumping out to a quick 2-0 lead heading into the break. The Knights jumped out to an 8-4 lead in the third set, but the Tigers quickly tied things up and eventually took a 19-16 lead. The Knights tied the score again at 22-22, but the Tigers would rally and take the set 25-23.
The fourth set was similar to the third and included eight ties early on. The Knights pulled ahead 14-13 and despite the Tigers keeping the score close to the end, the Knights eventually took the set 25-19 and the match 3-1.
“The first two sets today were not indicative of Tigers volleyball,” said head coach April Jauregui. “As a staff and unit we believe in this team and the tools we have on the floor. When everyone can believe in that, play their roles and execute point-to-point we will get over that hump. We are seeing improvement from some of our young players, but we know we have to keep pushing them to play at another level. I am happy we showed heart and fought back but in no way should we be satisfied. How we played in the final two sets is how we should have played from the start.
Veronica Zimmerman had her second double-double in a row, giving her a team-leading 11 on the year. The sophomore setter had 33 assists and 10 digs. Senior Viktorija Teivane had a team-best 11 digs Sunday afternoon.
“We are now half way through the conference season,” said Jauregiu. “We know what to expect moving forward. We must continue to get better on our side of the ball.”
The Tigers return to the Elma Roane Fieldhouse for a three-game homestand, starting with the Cincinnati Bearcats Friday, Nov. 1 at 7 p.m.
