Tiger Volleyball Ends Home Season With A Win

MEMPHIS, TENN. - The University of Memphis Tiger volleyball team improved to 19-8 overall, 6-8 in Conference USA, with a 3-0 win over UAB here Saturday evening. The Blazers, ranked 12th in the league, dropped to 10-16 on the year and 2-12 in the conference.
The win snapped Memphis' five-match C-USA losing streak and ended their home schedule. The Tigers finished with an 8-4 record at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse.
Seniors Adrianne Edmonds and Ginger Garrett led the Tiger offense with 12 kills apiece. Garrett recorded a .333 hitting mark and nine digs while Edmonds led the way defensively with 11 digs. Sophomore Shella Neba also recorded double-digit kills with 10, and senior Amie Hamilton tied Edmonds with 11 digs. Neba recorded a .500 hitting mark with 10 kills and just one error in 18 attempts.
The Tigers as a team outhit UAB with a .300 hitting mark including 52 kills and 16 errors in 120 total attempts. The Blazers totaled 29 kills and 19 errors in 106 attempts for a .094 hitting mark. Kristi Lee led UAB's offensive effort with 10 kills. Martina Shields and Allison Magner led in digs with 12 and 10, respectively.
"I was very proud of the way we played tonight, after coming off such a disappointing loss to USF last night," said head coach Carrie Yerty. "This was a great win for us to end on in the Fieldhouse and a great win for our seniors who have been instrumental in our success this season. We are going to have to finish strong next weekend to secure a high seeding for the C-USA Tournament."
Memphis will close out its league season on the road at East Carolina and Charlotte next weekend. They will also end the season with a non-league match-up with High Point University onSunday. The C-USA Tournament, which will feature 12 of the league's 14 teams, will be hosted by Houston, Nov. 15-18.
