MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Memphis volleyball team (12-14, 4-8 The American) battled the visiting Temple Owls (17-6, 8-4 The American) Friday evening at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse. The Tigers battled throughout, but eventually were downed 3-1 (25-18, 25-21, 20-25, 25-21).
The Owls out hit the Tigers .436 to .200 in the first set win. The two teams were much closer in the second set, as the Tigers hit .150 compared to .205 from the Owls. The set was close, but the Owls edged out the Tigers 25-21.
The Tigers regrouped during the break and came out strong in the third set. Despite five ties early the Tigers took the lead at 11-10 and controlled the set the rest of the way, finishing 25-20. The Tigers jumped out to an 11-7 lead in the fourth set, but the score would be tied seven times after that point, with no team leading by more than two points until the Owls took a 24-21 lead before finishing the set off 25-21.
Alexis Wesley led the offense for the Tigers, downing 14 kills while adding three blocks. Sydni Etheredge joined Wesley in double-digits, finishing with 10 kills. Veronica Zimmerman had her fifth double-double in a row, finishing the match with 36 assists and 12 digs.
The Tigers will hit the road for a four-game road trip starting next weekend. They'll travel to Texas, first to take Houston and then to Dallas to battle SMU. The following weekend they'll travel to the east coast to face UConn and then Rutgers. After their two-week hiatus from the Elma Roane Fieldhouse the Tigers will return to finish the season against UCF and then senior night against USF.
