Seniors Shine in Regular Season Finale

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Senior Night for the Memphis volleyball team was just that as seniors Tiara Gilkey and Heather Watts led Memphis to a sweep of Houston in their final performance at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse. Gilkey finished with a match-high 19 kills and hit .429, while Watts posted a double-double of 60 assists and 11 digs as the Tigers improve to 25-9 overall and 9-4 in C-USA play.
Memphis was solid all around on the evening, defeating Houston in kills (61-47), percentage (.326-.254) and digs (54-42). Gilkey was one of three Tigers to slam double figures in kills as Fehi Tuivai and Ashley Liford had 16 and 12 kills each. Tuivai hit a scorching .500 with just two errors, while Liford finished at a .381 clip. Memphis hit .300 or better in all three sets. Watts set the offense with 60 assists, a season high for a three-game match.
Defensively, the Tigers held the Cougars attack to a .254 percentage while recording 6.5 blocks and holding a 12-dig advantage. Watts' 11 digs led the squad, while Nancy Nellans dug 10 attacks. Defensive specialist Emily Steckel and libero Christen Clayton each had 10 digs.
Memphis will now prepare for an appearance in the 2004 C-USA Volleyball Tournament hosted by Louisville, Nov. 19-22. Memphis will be the No. 5 seed in the upcoming tournament.
