HOUSTON, Texas - The University of Memphis volleyball team opened up their two-game conference road trip with a sweep of the Houston Cougars. Memphis (13-14, 5-8) earned their first conference sweep of the season in defeating the host Cougars (15-13, 8-6) 25-18, 25-22, 25-18.

Junior Lauren Hawkins led the Tigers with 11 kills and redshirt sophomore Alexis Wesley finished the match with 10 kills. Sydni Etheredge finished with nine kills off of the bench for Memphis. 

The Tigers got a strong defensive effort from Aleksandra Petronijevic and Lindsey Purvis, who combined for 27 digs. Petronijevic led Memphis with 17 digs on the night.

Setter Veronica Zimmerman finished with 34 assists for the Tigers, who hit .292 as a team in Friday night's match.

Sarita Mikals, Courtney Warren and Emily Howard each finished with eight kills to lead Houston.

Houston started fast in the opening set. After Memphis tied the set at 2-2 on a service ace by Petronijevic before Houston scored six of the next seven points to take an 8-3 lead.

The Tigers were quick to respond after a timeout and went on an 8-3 run of their own to jump in front 11-10. Alexis Wesley had two kills during the run. The Cougars cut the Memphis lead to 18-16 before the Tigers closed out the opening set on a 7-2 run to take the first set 25-18.

Memphis kept the pressure on the Cougars after starting the second set on an 8-3 run. A kill by Michaela Moss gave the team their biggest lead of eight in set two at 14-6. Houston cut the gap to 21-19 and forced a Tigers timeout, but Memphis again responded well to close out set number two. Two service errors by Houston sandwiched around a kill by Sydni Etheredge gave Memphis the 25-22 win and a 2-0 lead in the match.

After the break, the third set was back and forth as neither team could gain an advantage early on. Memphis took an 11-10 lead then proceeded to seven points in a row to take a 17-10 advantage. Houston never got the lead back below six, and leading 24-18, Alexis Wesley closed out the match with a kill to give Memphis the impressive three-set victory.

Memphis returns to the court on Sunday afternoon in Dallas, Texas and will match up against the SMU Mustangs. Sunday's match will start at 1 p.m. CT.
