@Memphisvolley Loses to SMU, 3-0

DALLAS - The Memphis volleyball team (13-15, 5-9 The American) were downed 3-0 (25-18, 25-13, 25-18) on the road against the SMU Mustangs (19-9, 11-4 The American) Sunday afternoon. Alexis Wesley continued her strong play, leading the team in kills with 11 in only 19 attempts.
The Tigers jumped out to an early 7-4 lead in the first set, but SMU was able to tie the score at 11-11 before taking at 14-12 lead. A 9-2 run by the Mustangs gave them a 23-14 lead. Memphis went on a 4-1 run to pull within 24-18 but SMU was able to put down the final kill and take the set 25-18.
The Mustangs started quick in the second set, taking an early 7-2 lead. Another run later in the set, this time 6-2, gave the Mustangs an 18-9 lead. The Tigers pulled within 19-13 with a 4-1 run, but the Mustangs finish the set on a 6-0 run to take it 25-13.
Memphis came out of the break strong, jumping out to a 4-1 lead to start things off, but SMU was able to tie things up at 6-6. The two teams battled for any breathing room throughout the middle of the third set, with the Mustangs able to take a 17-14 lead. The Tigers would remain close throughout the rest of the set, but the Mustangs were able to hold onto the lead and take the set 25-18.
"Hats off to SMU for playing a very good match," head coach April Jauregui said. "We have shown great improvement in our quick attack. Alexis [Wesley] and Lauren [Hawkins] each had a strong weekend. We will work this week on our pin attacks to put them in scoring situations. We know we need to regroup quickly to play another two on the road next weekend. "
Wesley was the only Tiger with double-digit kills, with Lauren Hawkins finish second with seven on 21 attempts. Veronica Zimmerman led the Tigers with 28 assists while Aleksandra Petronijevic led the defense with eight digs.
"We have the right pieces," Jauregui said. "We have been preaching that all year. This is a great group of girls I know they want to finish the season on a high."
Memphis will return to the road next weekend for their final away games of the season, first taking on UConn Friday, Nov. 22 at Noon Eastern and then facing Rutgers Sunday, Nov. 24 at Noon as well.
