MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The list of awards for University of Memphis outside hitter Altrese Hawkins continues to grow, as she was recently honored by Cobra Magazine. Not only was Hawkins named to the All-National third team, but the senior was also named Student Athlete of the Year.

This marks the fourth straight year the Schaumburg, Ill., native has earned accolades from Cobra Magazine. After being named second team All-National in 2009 and 2010, Hawkins earned first team honors in 2011.

Hawkins led the Tigers with 456 kills this season, and her 3.77 kills per set average ranked fifth in Conference USA. She broke the 17 year-old school record of 1,789 career kills, and became the first Tiger in program history to eclipse the 1,800 kill plateau with 1,806. This season, Hawkins also ranked second on the team with a career-high 289 digs and recorded 15 double-doubles.

Along with Hawkins’ success on the court, she was one of 10 finalists for the Senior CLASS Award, having notable achievements in four areas of excellence - classroom, community, character and competition.

Cobra Magazine is a publication that celebrates the triumph and struggle of the black volleyball player. To read the All-National team announcement, got to www.cobramag.t83.net and download Issue No. 24 on the top left.
