MEMPHIS - -

Memphis volleyball received their 10th AVCA Team Academic Award for their 2013 season.

The University of Memphis volleyball team was one of 136 NCAA Division I programs to receive the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award for the 2013-14 season it was announced Thursday. In order to receive the honor, a team must carry a 3.30 GPA on an average 4.0 scale. This marks the 10th time the Tigers have been honored with the award in the 14th year of the program. Memphis has received the award in five of head coach April Jauregui's six seasons at the helm of her alma mater.

"I am extremely proud of the girls for their commitment to academic excellence," Jauregui said. "It is one of the pillars for our programs and is something the players take very seriously. We have a wonderful group of young ladies and it is a pleasure to work with them and see them grow both on and off the court."

The Tiger volleyball program opens training camp for the 2014 season on Saturday. In addition to the annual Blue/Gray Scrimmage, the team will hold Open Team Practice on three nights during training camp (Aug. 11, Aug. 15 and Aug. 19th). All Open Team Practices will be from 5:00-7:00 p.m.

Memphis, a member of the American Athletic Conference, will open their non-conference slate with four fall tournaments, including the season-opening tournament at Saint Louis University, Aug. 29-30th.

Tiger fans can get their first look at the 2014 Memphis roster at the team's annual Blue/Gray scrimmage, which will be held Friday, Aug. 22nd from 5:00-8:00 p.m. In addition to an intra-squad match, which begins at 6 p.m., the evening will also offer fans a chance to get autographs from the Tiger players.

Memphis returns eight letterwinners and has added seven newcomers to the 2014 roster. Leading the returners is second team American Athletic Conference honoree Alexis Wesley (Silverdale, Wash./Central Kitsap) . Wesley led Memphis last season with 112 total blocks (0.92/set) and hit .247 on the season, downing 2.10 kills a set during the Tigers' 15-17 season. Also returning this season is sophomore Catlin Lilly (New Albany, Ind./New Albany HS), who finished second on the team in her freshman campaign with 283 kills, despite missing the last part of the season with an injury.

On the defensive side, senior libero Aleksandra Petronijevic (Belgrade, Serbia/Prva Beogradska Gimnazua) anchors the Tigers' passing game. The Serbian senior led Memphis with 645 digs last season and is eying the school career digs mark heading in to her final season of college eligibility. The senior also led The American last season with her 5.15 digs per set average.

Petronijevic could be looking for junior setter Veronica Zimmerman (Toledo, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy) with her passes again this season. Zimmerman has quarterbacked the Tigers' offense in each of the past two seasons and ranked third in the American Athletic Conference last season with 10.59 assists per set. Zimmerman has some depth with her at the setter position for a change this season. After being the lone setter on the roster last season, she is joined this year by freshmen Regan Comperry (Clarksville, Tenn./Rossview HS) and Faith Myers (Elizabethtown, Ind./Columbus East).

Admission to all Tiger volleyball home matches is free. Memphis plays all of its home volleyball matches in the Elma Roane Fieldhouse, located in the heart of the University of Memphis' main campus at 495 Zach Curlin Street.
