Lauren Wright returns after leading the Tiger's in kills and points a year ago

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - With the Blue/Gray game quickly approaching for the Memphis volleyball team, each player is looking to improve. The Tigers return eight letterwinners and four starters from last season's 15-17 squad. Highlighting today's feature are middle blockers Lauren Wright, Alexis Wesley, Torika Baleilekutu and Charlotte Wellens.

Senior Lauren Wright was the Tigers' lone-member on the preseason All-American Conference team. Wright led the team with 408.5 points and 325 kills a year ago. The Rowlett, Texas, native needs 214 kills to surpass 1,000 in her career.

Junior Alexis Wesley ranked second on the team in the 2013 season with 321.5 points. The second-team All-Conference selection posted 12 matches with at least 10 kills and led the squad with 112 total blocks.

Joining the upperclassmen in the middle of the court is a set of gifted newcomers in junior Torika Baleilekutu and freshman Charlotte Wellens. Baleilekutu helped lead Missouri State-West Plains to back-to-back regional championships in her two years, including All-Region honors both seasons. Wellens joins the Blue and Gray after transferring from Lindsey Wilson College in the spring.

The Tigers are hosting the Blue/Gray game on Friday Aug. 22 at Elma Roane Fieldhouse at 6:00 p.m. before tipping off the regular season against Southeast Missouri State on August 29 in St. Louis at the Marcia E. Hamilton Classic. To learn more about Memphis Volleyball, visit gotigersgo.com and follow @MemphisVolley on Twitter and Instagram.
