Tiger Volleyball's Christine Bach Named C-USA Defensive Player of the Week
Sept. 8, 2008
IRVING, Texas - After a record-setting weekend, University of Memphis sophomore libero Christine Bach was named C-USA's Defensive Player of the Week the league office announced today. Bach is the first Tiger volleyball player to earn the C-USA weekly award this season. Bach, who hauled in her second career C-USA weekly honor, turned in a program-record 37 digs in a five-set contest versus IUPUI on Friday. She finished the weekend with 91 digs in 18 sets (5.06 DPG) to lead the Memphis defense that held opponents to a .124 attacking clip. Her 37 digs ranks in a tie for seventh on the C-USA all-time ledger. Bach is now the owner of the program's top two back row performances. She claimed the previous record for digs in a match with a 35-dig night against SMU on Nov. 2, 2007. She joins former Tiger Nancy Nellans as just the second Tiger volleyball player to post multiple 30-dig outings. While the record-breaking achievement was the highlight of her weekend, it was not only impressive outing she recorded. She opened the weekend strong, falling just one dig shy of the 30-dig mark with a 29-dig outing in a 3-1 win over Iona. Bach and the Tigers will prepare for their first road test of the year in the MSU Classic this weekend in Starkville, Miss. Memphis will face Central Arkansas and Centenary on Friday, September 12 at 10 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., respectively. They will round out the weekend on Saturday, September 13 against host Mississippi State at 1:30 p.m.
