Hayes Names Freshman of the Week, Teivane Named to Honor Roll and TSWA Player of the Week

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - McKenzie Hayes was named Freshman of the Week for the American Athletic Conference Monday afternoon for her efforts over the weekend. Viktorija Teivane was also named to the Conference Honor Roll this week as well as being named the Tennessee Sports Writers Association Player of the Week for volleyball.
"Mckenzie has been showing tremendous focus, discipline and progression in practice," said head coach April Jauregui. "Last weekend, when she was given the opportunity, she took hold of it and gave our team a needed boost. McKenzie has executed extremely well and we continue to look for good things from her this season."
Hayes earned the honors with a 2.92 kill per set average, helping the Tigers to a 2-1 record on the weekend. She finished the weekend with 35 kills and eight blocks as she made her first three collegiate starts. The is the second time a Tiger freshman has earned the award this year, with fellow first-year Catlin Lilly earning it after the first weekend of action this season.
Teivane earned her honors after she was named All-Tournament at the Evansville Tournament. She recorded three double-doubles in three games, hammering home 57 kills and pulling 36 digs. The senior hitter had a remarkable .301 hitting percentage over the weekend with only 14 errors in 143 total attempts.
"Vika had a remarkable weekend and really helped our team in a big way," said coach Jauregui. "I am happy she was recognized for honorable mention. She is a big part of what we do. She has the whole package and an incredible volleyball IQ."
Memphis volleyball returns to the court Tuesday, Sept. 17 at 6 p.m. when they welcome Arkansas State to the Elma Roane Fieldhouse.
