Nov. 4, 1999
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - In a night which was filled with emotional ups and downs, the University of Memphis volleyball team moved to 10-20 overall and 3-11 in Conference USA with a 3-0 shutout of UAB, Thursday.
A pre-match ceremony honored the two Memphis seniors, Rosie Glenn and Amy Vaughn, and the ensuing game one was a battle with neither team firing on all offensive cylinders. Memphis hit .098 in game one while UAB hit .065 in a 15-12 Memphis win.
In the second game, the Memphis serving game proved to be too much for the Blazers as sophomore Amie Hamilton tallied four of her five service aces in game two. The Tigers needed just three kills in game three to win 15-6.
UAB came out and ran out to a 5-0 lead in game three, before the Memphis serving game pulled the Tigers back to 5-5. The two teams deadlocked at 9-6 for 10 different serves with Memphis finally moving out to its 10th point on Glenn?s serve.
Freshman Cathy Casias took over the serve and aced the Blazers, helping the Tigers to 14-8. UAB tried to rally but was shut down, 15-10.
Glenn led all hitters with 10 kills, while sophomores Ginger Garrett and Emily Eichmann added five kills. Sophomore Sarah Wengler finished with four block assists.
Freshman Konstantina Katsoulis led UAB with eight kills while junior Kristen Pettey added seven in the Blazers? eighth consecutive loss.
