Memphis, Tenn.-- - Head Coach Carrie Yerty announced that the University of Memphis volleyball team signed its first signee for the 2001 volleyball season, Thursday.

The Tigers signed outside hitter Tiara Gilkey from Creve Couer, Mo., Wednesday. Gilkey, a two-time Suburban North League first team all-conference honoree chose Memphis over the likes of Tulane, Rice, UMass and Central Missouri State.

"On my visit, I didn't know what I wanted to do until my visit. But I really liked the team and the coaching staff and (Memphis) is somewhere where I want to spend my four years," Gilkey said.

Under Pattonsville High School Head Coach Terry Funderburk, Gilkey was a two-time team MVP and a two-time All-District honoree. She helped her squad to a 31-3 record this season.

Gilkey also plays club volleyball for the Saint Louis Elite. Her club team has participated in tournaments in Baltimore, Las Vegas and Chicago, so the C-USA travel schedule does not intimidate Gilkey. Gilkey is one of four members of the Elite to sign on the first day of the volleyball signing period.

"Tiara is a banger and she will make an immediate offensive impact for our team," Yerty said, "we're very excited that she decided to sign here."
