Hawkins and Wesley Named Second Team All-Conference for the American Athletic Conference
Dec. 3, 2013
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The American Athletic Conference announced the 2013 Annual All-Conference Awards Tuesday afternoon. Middle blockers Lauren Hawkins and Alexis Wesley represented Memphis being named to the second team. The Tigers finished the season with a 15-17 record overall and a 7-11 record in conference.
“I am so very happy for the both of them,” head coach April Jauregui said. “They have both improved tremendously this season and have been willing to step up the court as terminators, blockers and leaders of this team. Last year, Alexis was out due to an injury. She worked hard to get back on the court. Towards the end of the season she really hit her stride and showed the type of player she has become.”
Hawkins had a standout offensive season for the Tigers during 2013, as the junior tallied a career best 325 kills, besting her total of 226 from her sophomore year. Her 2.96 kill per set average was good for No. 12 in the American. She finished with a .263 hitting percentage, leading the Tigers and finishing No. 9 in the conference. Her 0.93 block per set average was best on the Tigers, while her total of 102 blocks was right behind Wesley’s total of 112.
“Lauren has made great strides at middle blocker,” Jauregui said. “We pushed Lauren out of her comfort zone, challenging her to be the leader we know she can be. She accepted that challenge and proved what can be accomplished when you are willing to work hard.”
Wesley finished her redshirt sophomore year third on the team with 256 kills and led the Tigers in total blocks with 112. Her .247 hitting percentage was good for No. 12 in the conference and was the third best rate of underclassmen on the list. Wesley finished the season strong, recording double-digit kills in six of her final seven matches, including a career-high of 20 kills against UCF Wednesday, Nov. 27.
“I am proud of Lauren and Alexis as well our whole team for continuing to challenge themselves throughout the season and finish the way that we did,” Jauregui said.
