NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Memphis softball team fell 17-0 in five innings to No. 9/10 Oklahoma in the Residence Inn Invitational at the OU Softball Complex on Saturday. The Tigers (9-6) end the day 1-1 after defeating North Texas 4-0 earlier.
Memphis managed a combined three hits off Oklahoma ace D.J. Mathis (11-1) and Jadyn Smith. The Tigers best scoring opportunity came in the bottom of the fifth inning when pinch runner Kim Sirman reached third base on a wild pitch and ground out after Leigh Rowan had led off the inning with a single.
Both redshirt freshman Heather Mott and senior Lindsay Kelso just missed home runs to left field with both balls being caught short of the fence with the wind blowing out to right.
Freshman Kimber Bossom (3-3) suffered the loss with freshman Rayna McClinton and junior Lindsey Sterling also seeing time on the mound in the game.
Memphis pitching gave up 17 runs, 14 earned, on 14 hits with three strikeouts. The 17 runs by an opponent is the most in Memphis history, surpassing 15 scored by Houston in a game last season.
Oklahoma scored eight runs in the first inning, and had at least a run in every inning.
The Tigers will continue the tournament on Sunday beginning with North Texas at 10 a.m. followed by Oklahoma at 12:15 p.m. The games were moved up an hour due to inclement weather expected to hit the area Sunday afternoon.
