Tigers Volleyball Splits Matches At Auburn Invitational Friday

Comperry has double-double in victory over Jacksonville.
AUBURN, Ala. – University of Memphis junior Regan Comperry posted a double-double of 38 assists and 13 digs, and senior Catlin Lilly added 12 kills and five digs to lead the Tigers volleyball squad to a 3-0 win over Jacksonville University in first-day action at the Auburn Invitational Friday evening.
Memphis defeated the Dolphins by scores of 26-24, 25-17 and 25-23. Freshman Addison Root had 10 kills.
Earlier in the day, Memphis dropped a 3-0 decision to host Auburn by scores of 25-21, 25-23 and 25-17. Senior McKenzie Hayes led the Tigers with a near double-double of eight kills and nine digs. She also had four blocks.
With its 1-1 mark on Friday, Memphis' record now stands at 5-3. The Tigers return to action Saturday, Sept. 10 when they close Auburn Invitational play against Miami, Ohio, at 11 a.m. (CT).
In the win over Jacksonville, senior Michaella Moss led the squad with a season-high 23 digs. Since moving to libero for the first time in her career in last weekend's Tiger Invitational, Moss is averaging 19.4 digs in five matches. Summer Morgan added nine kills, three digs and three blocks.
The first set saw Memphis jump out to an early 4-1 advantage, but Jacksonville responded to tie the set at 10-all. The Dolphins continued their run and took a 15-10 lead. Memphis, though, answered with an 11-4 run to take a 21-19 lead. Jacksonville tied the match again at 24-all, but Hayes and Lilly had consecutive kills to wrap up the first set 26-24.
The second set was tied at 9-all before a Tigers' 5-0 mini-run put Memphis ahead for good at 14-9. The Tigers cruised from that point to a 25-17 second-set victory. Morgan helped Memphis gain control midway through the second set with three-straight kills.
The third set was close throughout with the largest lead three points. The Tigers led 22-20 late, but three-consecutive Jessica Armstrong kills put Jacksonville in front 23-22 with the chance to send the match into a fourth set. Memphis, however, scored the set's final three points for the 25-23 final. A Lilly kill and a Hayes service ace wrapped up the match win.
In the day's earlier match, Comperry had 22 assists, and Moss added 16 digs in the 3-0 loss to Auburn. Morgan led the Tigers with five blocks.
Memphis hung with Auburn the entire first set, with the host Tigers' largest lead four points. Auburn led 21-19 and used a 4-2 closing run to take the first set 25-21.
In the second set, Memphis built an early 5-1 lead and remained with an advantage at 16-15 midway through the set. Auburn gained a lead at 18-16 with a 3-0 spurt. From that point, the second set was tied five times before Auburn won the set's final two points for the 25-23 win.
The third set was at 11-all before an 11-4 run put Auburn ahead for good at 22-15. The home Tigers won the third set 25-17.
