Tigers Rally for Two-Point Conference Win over Temple
Jan 13, 2016 | Men's Basketball
Shaq Goodwin records 22-point, 10-rebound double-double
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Ricky Tarrant Jr. went to the free throw line after a violent collision with 1.5 seconds left in the game that nearly saw him loose a tooth, and the fifth-year senior calmly drained both attempts, giving the Memphis Tigers a 67-65 American Athletic Conference win over the Temple Owls at FedExForum on Wednesday evening.
Shaq Goodwin recorded his second double-double of the season with 22 points and 10 rebounds, as the senior climbed from 36th to 31th in the school's career scoring record book with the effort. Dedric Lawson also had a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds, while Tarrant scored 13 points to go with a season-high-tying six rebounds.
"This was a good win for our team," said Pastner. "That's a good Temple team that we beat. Every game that we've had against Temple has just gone done to the wire. I just thought we were a little lethargic in some areas of the game, especially at the start of the second half. Dedric [Lawson] did not play well the first half, but I was really proud of him that he didn't let his confidence get down. He stayed upbeat and he had a great second half. He and Shaq Goodwin both had double-doubles, plus Shaq had four blocks. I'm really prod of both those guys."
Tarrant dished out four assists, while Goodwin led the team with four blocked shots and three steals.
"We won the game because we got stops – our defense has carried us all year and it did again. We were down 11 early in the second half and again we held them to 37 percent from the field and 28 percent from three. They got three shot-clock violations today and that's due to our defense. I was really proud of our defense, we forced them into 13 turnovers."
Temple jumped out quickly in the game, leading by as many as seven points with 15:23 to play in the first half before the Tigers went on a run, out-scoring the Owls 17-5 over the next seven minutes to lead by five, 21-16 – Memphis' largest lead of the game.
The visitors followed with an immediate 11-0 run, and the lead grew to as many as eight in the first half, as the Tigers were able to trim the margin to six heading into the locker room at halftime.
The Owls scored the first five points of the second half to lead by as many as 11, and Temple led by 11 four and a half minutes into the second stanza. A Memphis 14-4 run over the next five minutes erased the margin, and knotted the score at 52 points apiece with 9:37 to play in the contest.
The Tigers saw the visitors follow with six straight points, but with solid defense and the backing of a FedExForum crowd of 12,247, Memphis chipped away at the margin, tying the score again with 1:12 to play on a pair of Goodwin free throws.
After pulling down a defensive rebound, Goodwin hit 1-of-2 free throws to give Memphis its first lead since the first half, which was followed by Tarrant hitting 1-of-2 free throws the next trip down, pushing the Tiger lead to two at 65-63.
A turnover under the basket saw Temple tie the score with two seconds left, setting the stage for Tarrant's late-game heroics from the charity stripe. A Devin Coleman three-point heave as time expired bounced off the rim to seal the 67-65 Memphis win.
Memphis hit 20-of-56 shots from the field (.357 percent) and 4-of-16 (.250 percent) from long range. The Tigers, who came into the game leading the country in percentage of points coming from the charity stripe, increased that number by hitting 23-of-30 shots (.767) from the free throw line.
Jaylen Bond scored 14 points and pulled down 14 rebounds, while Josh Brown scored 15 points while dishing out a game-high seven assists.
The Tigers return to action on Saturday, January 16, when the team hosts the USF Bulls at 11 a.m. at FedExForum.
