Memphis opens dual season with a home victory.
MEMPHIS – The University of Memphis women's tennis team (1-0) opened its dual and home season with a 6-1 victory over Chattanooga (0-1), Sunday.
In doubles play, the duo of Gabrielle Paul and Tara McElroy got on the board first for the Lady Tigers, scoring a 6-2 win at No. 3. Senior Kathryn Hughes and freshman Janina Berres then teamed up to secure the doubles point for Memphis with a 6-4 win at No. 2, giving Memphis the 1-0 match lead. Chattanooga held on in a tiebreak for the win at No. 1 doubles, 7-6 (1), to avoid the shutout.
Hughes then pushed Memphis ahead 2-0 with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles. Paul then battled for a 7-5 second set win at No. 6 to claim a straight set win there and move the Tigers to 3-0 up in the match.
Marta Morga secured the victory for Memphis with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles. The two teams played out the remaining matches even with the match decided, and that allowed Berres to pick up her first collegiate dual singles win, 7-6, 6-1, at No. 5. Hanna Sohn then added her first dual singles match win as a Tiger, 6-4, 7-6, at No. 2 for a 6-0 Tiger lead.
At No. 1, Anki Wind came back from 5-4 down to take the first set 7-5, then fell 6-3 in the second to Kayla Jones, a White Station HS graduate. Jones, playing in front of a big hometown crowd, jumped up 4-1 in the third set when the Tigers' Wind was injured and was forced to retire from the match.
Memphis will play its final home match of January on Friday, when they host Denver at 9 a.m. at The Racquet Club of Memphis. That match will be a reunion of sorts for Hughes, who played two seasons at Denver before transferring to Memphis prior to last season. Admission to the Friday morning match is free.
