MEMPHIS, Tenn. – After two months off from competition, the No. 9 nationally-ranked University of Memphis rifle squad resumes action at Murray State's annual Withrow Invitational this weekend. The Tigers shoot Sunday, Jan. 24.
"We've had some time off, but sometimes that's a double-edged sword," said head coach Butch Woolbright. "With the long break, our shooters are out of their routines a little. Since we've returned to campus, we've have some good practices and some not-so good ones. We'll just have to see how things go when we start shooting in the match at Murray State Sunday."
Among some of the programs shooting at this weekend's Withrow Invitational are No. 2 Murray State, No. 3 Kentucky, No. 3 TCU, No. 8 Nebraska, No. 12 Jacksonville State, No. 16 Ole Miss and No. 20 UT Martin.
Last season, Memphis placed fourth at the Withrow Invitational. Beth Lee posted a ninth-place finish in air rifle, and Amy Fister was eighth in smallbore to lead the Tigers' effort.
In its last outing in late November, Memphis placed third at Jacksonville State's Gamecock Invitational and also posted a Great America Rifle Conference (GARC) over N.C. State. Fister placed fourth with a career-high aggregate score of 1172 at the Gamecock Invitational. Fister's 590 air rifle score also was a career best.
