Jan 30, 2016 | Baseball
Guest Bill Courtney delivered his powerful message to Tiger fans
When the Memphis Tiger baseball family gathered for the annual Meet the Tigers Banquet, they weren't just treated to a first-class event hosted Friday night at the Landers Center in Southaven, Miss., they also had the privilege of hearing special guest Bill Courtney speak about his experiences as a businessman, coach and author.
Â
Courtney, a native Memphian, told his story of being brought back to Earth after the fame from his book, "Against the Grain", and the documentary he starred in, Undefeated. He received a standing ovation as he left the stage.
Â
Memphis head baseball coach Daron Schoenrock spoke highly of Courtney, "I'm flattered that he donated his time to do this for us for a fundraising event, but also the message he brought for our players."
Â
This occasion joined together the Tiger family to kick off the 2016 season. Each player, coach, and staff member was personally recognized by Coach Schoenrock, and thanked in advance for their hard work.
Â
Athletic Director Tom Bowen also spoke to the crowd on hand and was able to take part in a special recognition of Courtney. Bowen welcomed senior captains Damo DeMatteo and Corey Chafin to the stage to initiate Courtney into the Tiger family by presenting him with a Memphis Tiger baseball cap.
Â
The Tigers open their season on the road in Chattanooga with a three-game series against SEC rival Tennessee on February 19. The home opener for Memphis will be against Belmont at 4:00 p.m. on February 24 at FedExPark. The Tigers will then host SIU-Edwardsville for the first home series of the season.
