Men’s Soccer Picks Up Road Victory At Lipscomb Wednesday
Oct 05, 2016 | Men's Soccer
Morse and Morise each collect a goal in the victory
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – In the second to last non-conference outing of the season, the University of Memphis men's soccer team earned a 2-0 shutout victory over Lipscomb Wednesday. The Tigers have registered six shutouts this season including the last two matches to improve to 6-4-1 on the year.
"I give credit to Lipscomb for really pressuring us and playing a good first half," said head coach Richard Mulrooney. "I think the guys picked it up intensity wise (in the second half) and played with a bit more quality. I think the second half was more of an even match."
The Bisons took an early 4-1 shot advantage over the Tigers. In the 40th minute, however, freshman Jackson Morse connected on a deflection by Burke Fahling to put Memphis in the lead, 1-0. It was Morse's team-leading fourth goal of the season.
Out of the half, the Tigers defense was put on full guard as the Lipscomb offense fired six shots on goal. Junior goalkeeper Jake Leeker saved all of those shots to keep the score in favor of Memphis.
"Jake had another solid game," added Mulrooney. "Our back line did well in general."
In the 89th minute, Mason Morise tacked on an insurance goal for Memphis to put the Tigers up 2-0. On his second goal of the season, Raul Gonzalez assisted Morise.
Memphis finished the game even in shots with Lipscomb, 11-11 and Leeker tallied seven saves in his fifth solo shutout of the season. The Bisons finished with nine corners to the Tigers' seven.
Memphis will return to the Mike Rose Soccer Complex for two American Athletic Conference matches in a row, starting with UCF Saturday evening. Kick-off against the Knights is at 7 p.m. Saturday's match will be broadcasted on the Memphis Tiger Network and live stats can be found at www.gotigersgo.com.
