Five separate players score in the sixth shutout of the season
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Three goals in the first half and two more in the second helped propel the University of Memphis women's soccer team to a 5-0 victory over East Carolina Thursday evening. Five separate Tigers scored en route to the team's eighth victory of the year.
Â
Memphis improves to 8-3-1 on the year and 2-1-0 in American Athletic Conference play. The five goals scored matches a season-high set against UT Martin on Sept. 18.
Â
"There are no easy games in this conference," said head coach Brooks Monaghan. "East Carolina is a very strong team. We finished our chances and I expected our kids to respond in a very positive way after the UConn loss and they did."
Â
After East Carolina fired the first two shots of the match, the Memphis offense started to come together. In the 15th minute, Lizzie Woerner connected on a corner kick by Jessica Lisi for the first score of the match.
Â
Just under 10 minutes later, the Tigers struck again with a goal by Valerie Sanderson. Sanderson's team-leading ninth goal of the year was assisted by Woerner's serve from the right side.
Â
Without missing a beat, the Tigers once again just over four minutes later. A cross in from the right side by Lisi was deflected by Sanderson and ultimately finished by Marie Levasseur.
Â
At the half, the Tigers owned a 10-5 shot advantage and a 4-2 edge on corner kicks.
Â
Out of the intermission, both teams struggled to find the momentum. Then, however, in the 60th minute, the Tiger offense came alive again. This time, Serena Dolan joined the scoring group with her third goal of the season.
Â
In the 67th minute, sophomore Catherine Levasseur became the fifth Tiger to score against the Pirates. She had a one touch inside the six-yard box for her first collegiate goal. To top it off, her twin sister, Marie, was credited with the assist.
Â
This was the sixth shutout of the season for Memphis. Maryse Bard-Martel recorded six saves in the match and in just under 20 minutes in goal, Rachel Ashworth had two saves.
Â
Woerner, Marie Levasseur and Sanderson each tallied three points in the victory. Lisi ended the contest with two assists.
Â
The Tigers remain at home this weekend with a Sunday afternoon contest against Cincinnati at 1 p.m. Admission is free at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex and fans unable to be in attendance can watch the game on the Memphis Tiger Network. The first 100 fans into MRSC Sunday will receive a vuvuzela.
