2016 Memphis Football Schedule
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – It's here, Tiger Nation. The 2016 University of Memphis football schedule is out, and Tiger fans can start planning their tailgates for head coach Mike Norvell's first season at Memphis. Game times, which are determined by the league's television partners, will be released at a later date.
Here are some 2016 Tigers schedule highlights:
The Tigers' 2016 seven home dates also ties a school record for most home contests for a single season. Memphis also played seven home games in the 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2013 campaigns.
Memphis' seven 2015 bowl foes – which combined for an impressive 69-25 record and a 73.4 winning percentage in 2015 – are Bowling Green, Cincinnati, Houston, Ole Miss, Navy, Temple and USF. The Tigers' 2016 schedule ties the record for the most bowl teams from the previous season since college football went to a 12-game schedule in 2002. In 2010, Memphis played seven squads that played in the 2009 postseason.
The home games come fast and furious early for the Tigers, as they don't leave the Bluff City for the entire month of September. Memphis opens its 2016 schedule against Southeast Missouri Sept. 3, and after a bye date Sept. 10, hosts Kansas Sept. 17 and Bowling Green Sept. 24.
Memphis' lone bye date is the second week of the 2016 schedule. However, it's not the earliest bye date in recent seasons. The Tigers' 2013 schedule started with a bye date on college football's opening weekend. Memphis also had a second-week bye date in the 2007 campaign.
The Tigers kick off the month of October with a road contest, but they don't leave the Mid-South to play the game. Memphis travels to Oxford, Miss., to face 2016 Sugar Bowl champion Ole Miss Oct. 1.
Memphis wraps up its early-season, home-heavy schedule with a quick turnaround game against Temple Thursday, Oct. 6 at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium. The match-up with the Owls is the first of four television special Thursday/Friday games for the Tigers in 2016.
After an Oct. 14 (Friday) contest at Tulane, Memphis makes its first voyage to Annapolis, Md., to play Navy Oct. 22. It is the program's second all-time trip to a United States service academy and the Tigers' first since playing Army at West Point, N.Y., in 2000. In its history, Memphis has made two trips to West Point, N.Y., in 1985 and 2000.
The Tigers host Tulsa Oct. 29 and play at SMU Nov. 5, before closing 2016 with three-straight games against 2015 postseason teams. Memphis finishes the 2016 schedule against USF (Miami Beach Bowl), Cincinnati (Hawai'i Bowl) and Houston (Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl).
Memphis, though, plays two of its final three games at home. The Bulls visit the Liberty Bowl Nov. 12 for the Tigers' final Saturday game of the 2016 regular season.
The Tigers close their regular season with back-to-back television special Friday games against Cincinnati Nov. 18 and Houston Nov. 25. Memphis travels to Cincinnati, Ohio, to face the Bearcats Nov. 18, before returning to the Liberty Bowl to host defending American Athletic Conference champion Houston Nov. 25.
The Memphis-Houston game is on Black Friday, which is the Friday after the Thanksgiving holiday. It is the first time in program history that the Tigers are playing a home game on Black Friday. Memphis, though, previously played a Black Friday road game in 2009 and dropped a narrow 33-30 overtime decision at Tulsa Nov. 27, 2009.
