Memphis and Oklahoma State Battle to 2-2 Tie

Jessica Lisi and Valerie Sanderson scored to help the Tigers share the points
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis and Oklahoma State squared off in an exciting and physical match that ended in a 2-2 double overtime draw Friday night at Mike Rose Soccer Complex. The Tigers (5-2-1) trailed on two separate occasions but managed to fight back both times to send the match to overtime for the first time this season.
"I was very pleased with the way we played. That was an exciting game," Memphis head coach Brooks Monaghan said. "This was a true test for us, because we didn't perform very well last Sunday against Oklahoma. Our players saw that if you have the right mentality that you can play with anybody."
The Cowgirls scored both of their goals off of corner kicks, of which they had six during the match. The opening goal came in the 56th minute when freshman defender Elise Hawn headed in a corner from senior defender Christina Jean-Charles.
Memphis freshman midfielder Jessica Lisi leveled the score from the penalty spot in the 69th minute after senior Valerie Sanderson was fouled in the box.
OSU again found the back of the net in the 79th minute when Jean-Charles headed in a corner from freshman midfielder Julia Lenhardt.
With just over five minutes left in regulation, Sanderson was in the right place at the right time to punch in a rebound and knot the match back up, 2-2. Freshman defender Stasia Mallin served in a long ball that the goalkeeper couldn't handle and Sanderson was there to punish the mistake, knocking the ball into the net from close range.
The overtime periods were fairly closely matched with each team creating a few chances but not grabbing a match-winner.
Memphis heads into its final non-conference match at UT Martin on Sunday at 7 p.m. at Skyhawk Field. The Skyhawks are 3-4 this season but have won back-to-back matches heading into Sunday. The game will be streamed live on the OVC Digital Network.
The Tigers will open American Athletic Conference play next weekend with a pair of road matches, first at Temple on Sept. 29 at 2:30 p.m. (CT) before playing at UConn on Oct. 2 at noon (CT).
