Tigers had four different goal-scorers in 5-0 win at UT Martin
MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Memphis women's soccer team dominated from start to finish in a convincing 5-0 win over UT Martin Sunday night at Skyhawk Field. The five-goal output is the most by the Tigers (6-2-1) since the 2013 season.
"I was very pleased with the performance," Memphis head coach Brooks Monaghan said. "I was a bit concerned going in after a really tough match on Friday. The girls were tremendous in their work-rate. Their work-rate set the tone for the game and allowed us to win by a significant margin. Good things come with hard work."
Sophomore Marie Levasseur returned after missing the last three matches while taking part in a Canadian National Team camp and had an immediate impact. Levasseur started the scoring in the 27th minute with her first goal since the match against Ole Miss.
Senior Valerie Sanderson assisted on Levasseur's goal and then bagged one of her own to make the lead 2-0 before the break. Sanderson's 32nd-minute goal goal, was her eighth of the season and ties her for the American Athletic Conference lead.
Sanderson now stands second all-time in the Memphis record book with 44 career goals and 103 points.
Sophomore Elizabeth Woerner put the game away in the second half with two goals in a five-minute span. The goals were the first of the season for Woerner.
Freshman Mikayla Morton scored the first goal of her career, further solidifying the win in the 72nd minute. Sophomore Chanel Hudson-Marks assisted on Morton's goal.
Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Rachel Ashworth made her Memphis debut, playing the final 22 minutes of the match and making one save.
Memphis has only lost two matches this season, but both came on a Sunday following a tough Friday night match. The loss to Little Rock was two days after Memphis beat Ole Miss 2-1 and the loss to Oklahoma was two days after the 1-0 win over Rice.
The Tigers will head into conference play next, where the team will play two matches a weekend in four of the final five weeks.
"Every point matters in conference play. Every game is a big game on Thursday or Friday night and then you have to turn around and play on Sunday. Now we have set a standard for ourselves and shown that we are capable of playing at a high level following a tough match. So I can use that as an example and hold the team to that standard since we have done it," said Monaghan.
Memphis will have a short break before starting play in the American, with 11 days before the next match. The Tigers will then play the first two league matches on the road, at Temple on Sept. 29 at 2:30 p.m. (CT) and UConn on Oct. 2 at noon (CT).
