Memphis Blanks UMKC 3-0
Sep 02, 2016 | Women's Soccer
Valerie Sanderson scored two more goals to up her season total to five
"I thought we started strong and that's what we challenged our kids to do," Memphis head coach Brooks Monaghan said. "We got a little complacent in the last 25 minutes of the first half and we challenged the kids to step up from all different facets and they responded."
Just as she has done all season, Sanderson scored both of her goals with her head. The senior has five goals to her name so far this season and four of them were headers.
On the first goal sophomore Marie Levasseur burst down the left wing and crossed into the box where Sanderson nodded it into the net from close range.
Sophomore Chanel Hudson-Marks was opportunistic in making the lead 2-0 in the 55th minute. The ball bounced around in the box before falling to the feet of Hudson-Marks, who saw an empty net and scored.
Sanderson put the game away for good in the 76th minute with her second headed goal, this time from a cross by sophomore Elizabeth Woerner from the left wing.
The Tigers were dominant for most of the match, outshooting the Kangaroos 21-5. If not for 'Roos goalkeeper Anna Lillig, who made several outstanding saves, the Tigers win could have been even bigger. Lillig finished with 10 saves.
Memphis senior goalkeeper Maryse Bard-Martel was only called on to make one save and faced only five total shots in the match.
Memphis will not be in action on Sunday, but the Tigers will be hosting a youth clinic from 1:15 p.m. to 1:45 p.m., prior to the start of the men's match against Missouri State at 2 p.m.
Next up for the Tigers is a trip to Tulsa, Okla. to play Rice, Sept. 9 at 5 p.m., and Oklahoma, Sept. 11 at 1 p.m., as part of the University of Tulsa Classic.
