Track And Field Posts Nine First-Place Finishes At Arkansas State

Tigers sweep men's and women's 100m, 400m crowns.
JONESBORO, Ark. – After sweeping the men's and women's javelin titles Friday, the University of Memphis track and field teams brought out the brooms again on the second day of action at Arkansas State's Red Wolves Open Saturday, taking the crowns in the men's and women's 100 and 400 meters.
Cera Chavez (11.79) and Davon DeMoss (10.34) won the women's and men's 100 meters, respectively, and Destinee Lansden (57.67) and Naaman Norment (48.77) followed with the women's and men's 400 meters titles, respectively.
Chavez's 100 meters time was a season-best, and Norment's appearance in the outdoor 400 meters was a career-first.
2017 Red Wolves Open Highlights/Day Two
- Cera Chavez and Destinee Lansden both were double winners Saturday. In addition to winning their individual events (Chavez, women's 100 meters; Lansden, women's 400 meters), both ran legs on the first-place women's 4x100 meter relay (46.31).
- The Tigers' four other first-place performances were Dorina Baiker in the women's pole vault (12-10; 3.91m), Naaman Norment in the men's 400 meters (48.77), Brock Ballard in the men's 1500 meters (3:58.04) and Aaron Persinger in the men's 110-meter hurdles (14.29). Â
- Freshman Adam Neelly set outdoor season-bests in all three throws events this weekend. On Saturday, Neelly had season-best throws in the discus (166-1; 50.62m) and shot put (55-3.5; 16.85m). He posted a season-best hammer mark (161-1; 49.11m) Friday.
- Other season-bests on the men's side: Julian Sanchez-Pinto in the 1500 meters (4:00.69) and Lennard Biere in the shot put (52-8.75; 16.07m).
- James Durkin ran an outdoor personal-best in the men's 3000 meters (8:54.62).
- Arnica Zitting, a transfer from Arkansas State, and Megan Briley both ran outdoor personal-bests in the women's 3000 meters. Zitting placed third (10:02.83) and Briley fifth (10:25.19) in the event. Zitting won the 3000 meters at the 2015 Red Wolves Open as an Arkansas State freshman.
- ToNaya Gulley ran a personal-best in the women's 100 meters (12.63).
- Two Tigers women's throwers set season-bests Saturday, both by two feet over their previous marks. Nina de Poorter bettered her season-best in the discus (159-2; 48.52m), and DeeNia McMiller did the same in the shot put (46-11.75; 14.32m).
