May 06, 2022 | Baseball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – In the opener of a three-game conference set, the Memphis Tigers (21-22, 5-11) and East Carolina Pirates (28-18, 12-4) each took a no-hitter into the ninth inning. Memphis lost the no-hit bid on a leadoff single from LF Lane Hoover in the ninth, but East Carolina couldn't score for LHP C.J. Mayhue (ND) and had a combined no-hit bid broken up on a funky hop in the 10th against RHP Carter Spivey, though the Pirates eventually four times in the 13th in a 4-1 win.

Memphis: 1, East Carolina: 4, 13 innings
WP: Carter Spivey (5-0)
LP: Jacob Gilmore (1-4)
SV: N/A
How it happened:
- Both starters dominated their respective outings, as Mayhue walked just one and struck out nine over nine no-hit innings, while RHP Landon Gartman (ND) struck out 10 and walked four over eight no-hit innings for the Tigers
- Memphis had just one runner reach second base over the first nine frames, while the Pirates didn't have a runner reach third base until the ninth inning
- The Pirates loaded the bases against LHP Dalton Kendrick with one out in the ninth, but the left-handed reliever struck out 2B Jacob Starling and got 3B Alec Makarewicz to fly out and keep the game scoreless
- After Kendrick worked himself out of another jam in the 10th, Memphis got a leadoff double from 3B Logan Kohler in the 11th, but after an intentional walk of SS Ben Brooks, Spivey got DH Jacob Compton to ground into a double play, which quelled Memphis' threat
- East Carolina put two on in the 11th and loaded the bases in the 12th, but Kendrick escaped both frames and kept the game 0-0
- The Tigers couldn't take advantage of a leadoff single from C Taylor Howell in the 11th or a one-out walk from Brooks in the 12th
- After three frames from Kendrick, the Tigers turned to Gilmore, who struck out the first hitter that he faced but then walked Starling before two consecutive singles loaded the bases for C Ben Newton
- Newton, who was stranded at third base in the 12th inning, gave East Carolina a 2-0 lead with a two-run single, while the Pirates added another run on a sacrifice fly and a fourth in the inning on a Memphis error, as East Carolina led 4-0 after 12.5 frames
- 1B Chris Swanberg led off the bottom of the 13th with a home run, his fifth home run of the season, but Spivey retired the next three in order as he closed out East Carolina's 4-1 win
Notables:
- LF Ian Bibiloni (IBB) extended his on-base streak to 17, the longest active streak on the team, while CF Zach Wilson (BB) has reached base in 15 straight games
- Gartman set season highs with eight innings pitched, 10 strikeouts, and 131 pitches in his team-best sixth quality start of the season
Up Next:
- The Tigers and Pirates will meet up for the middle game of the set Saturday, with first pitch set for 2 p.m., as Memphis will honor 15 seniors prior to the game
- Just before Sunday's series finale, the Tigers will have a pre-game ceremony to celebrate the 18 years that head coach Daron Schoenrock has led Memphis baseball
