Memphis Drops Match to Shockers

WICHITA, Kan. – The University of Memphis volleyball team (9-10, 1-4 American) dropped a three-set match to Wichita State (11-6, 3-2 American) on Friday evening inside Charles Koch Arena.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Memphis and Wichita State traded points early in the opening frame until a service error from Brooklyn Leggett helped the Tigers gain momentum. Back-to-back service aces gave Memphis a 9-6 advantage, and Génesis Rodríguez and Brianna Washington extended the lead to 12-8 with a kill each. The Shockers countered with a 5-0 run fueled by kills from Sydney Dunning and Leggett. Janyah Henderson added a kill to spark a 3-0 Memphis run for a 16-13 advantage, but Wichita State rallied again to take a narrow 20-19 lead. Both teams battled down the stretch before Emerson Wilford sealed the set for the Shockers, 30-28.
Wichita State controlled the pace late in the second set to earn a 25-17 win. The Tigers stayed close early behind kills by Henderson, Washington and Jasmyn Tate, while Sydney Marshall added a service ace to cut the deficit to 10-8. The Shockers responded with a strong offensive push led by Leggett and Wilford, using a 7-2 run to pull ahead 22-17. Dunning closed the frame with three service aces to give Wichita State a 2-0 match lead heading into the third set.
The Shockers carried their momentum into the final set with an early 8-3 run. Riley McCloskey helped spark the Tiger offense with a 3-0 rally, but Wichita State capitalized on Memphis attack errors to extend its lead. Leggett recorded three kills and Dunning added four as the Shockers secured the match with a 25-16 victory. Wichita State took advantage of seven Memphis errors in the final frame.
Notables
- Riley McCloskey led the offense for the Tigers with eight kills and 8.5 points.
- Za'Niya Boyles and Janyah Henderson followed with seven and six kills, respectively.
- Setter Sydney Marshall recorded 22 assists in tonight's loss to tie her career high.
- This marks the fourth time that Marshall put up 20-plus assists in a match.
- Marshall was also the lone Tiger to reach double digits in digs, finishing with 11.
- Three Tigers (Janyah Henderson, Sydney Marshall, Maddy Bach) each registered two service aces.
- Tigers put up a total of seven aces, the most team aces since Sept. 19 against UCF.
- Libero Abigail Schlueter had one service ace, bringing her career total to 94.

Memphis closes out the weekend with a road contest at Tulsa on Sunday. The match will begin at 1 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
