Memphis Completes Sweep of 901 Classic
Feb 09, 2025 | Softball
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Hampton jumped out to an early lead, plating four runs before Memphis even came to bat in the first inning.
- Taniyah Brown quickly cut the Hampton lead to just one run after she slugged a three-run home run, making the score 4-3 in favor of the Pirates.
- The home run was the first of Brown's collegiate career.
- Lightning and rain caused the game to enter a weather delay before the first inning concluded.
- The delay paused action for one hour and 52 minutes, resulting in the first inning taking two hours and 34 minutes to be completed.
- Hampton quickly struck back in the second inning, extending its lead to three runs after two miscues by the Memphis defense.
- After entering in relief in the first inning, Lyrical Bennett kept Pirate batters in check, including a scoreless third frame where she struck out Hampton's Carmynn Bonner after retiring the first two batters on just four pitches.
- The Tigers took the lead for the first time in the game after a four-run inning, with RBIs coming off the bats of Shelby Durbin, Neely Taylor and Zoe Adebayo.
- The Pirates took no time to tie the game at seven runs apiece as Jada Evans recorded an RBI single.
- Memphis exploded for nine runs in the bottom half of the fourth inning, highlighted by Neely Taylor's RBI double.
- Five different Tigers recorded RBIs during the frame.
- Hampton attempted to mount a comeback with two outs in the fifth inning with a two-RBI single by Kylie Hill, but Hill was tagged out at second base attempting to advance on a throw.
- After a single by Neely Taylor, Zoe Adebayo stepped up to the plate and delivered a walk-off two-run home run to earn the run-rule win for Memphis.
- The home run was Adebayo's second of the weekend and resulted in her 10th and 11th RBIs.
- After previously not having played for the Tigers since May of 2023, Neely Taylor recorded her second 3-for-3 performance and currently leads the team with a .643 batting average.
- Six Tigers (Neely Taylor, Kennedy Semien, Taniyah Brown, Zoe Adebayo, McKaylee Polk, Shelby Durbin) have an OPS of at least 1.000.
- In five games, the Tigers have scored 55 runs. It took Memphis 28 games to reach that mark during the 2024 season.
- Memphis continues to rewrite the record book, extending its streak of consecutive wins to start a season to five games.

The Tigers head on the road to Natchitoches, La. next weekend where they will play Jacksonville State twice and Northwestern State twice for a total of four games in the Northwestern State Classic.
