No. 11 Tigers Collect 2-0 Victory at No. 25 Rice

HOUSTON – No. 11 Memphis women's soccer picked up their second ranked win of the season on Sunday afternoon at Holloway Field, a comfortable 2-0 victory over No. 25 Rice.
The Tigers (9-0-2, 3-0-1 American) scored once in each half through Flavie Dubé and Ashley Henderson to take sole control of the top spot in the conference through four games. It marks just the second season in program history where they've picked up two top-25 wins (2009). It also marks their first ranked win in a true road game since November 12, 2022, at No. 10 Saint Louis in the NCAA Tournament.
"I'm really pleased with the effort today, especially in the first half. We haven't always performed our best in the heat, so to battle with a tough, direct team in the elements is great," said head coach Brooks Monaghan. "I think we are still growing as a team, and that was on display with these two performances. We're seeing a lot of different gameplans against us, and we want to still be growing as a team and not be stagnant as the season wears on."
Despite it being their first morning kick-off of the season, Memphis started as strong as they have all season, leading to their first first-half goal in conference play. Ai Kitagawa won the ball back on the edge of Rice's penalty area, and Henderson's flick found Dubé who buried the shot with her left foot for her third goal of the season.
The Tigers remained on the front foot, but Rice's first shot of the game in the 40th minute forced goalkeeper Abby Kudla into a tricky save over the crossbar. The sophomore goalkeeper added three saves to her tally as the Memphis defense kept their eighth clean sheet of season and the third in four conference games.
After Finley Lavin won the ball back at the edge of Memphis' penalty area in the 56th minute, it took five passes, the last of which was a threaded through ball from Kitagawa, to send Henderson clean on goal for her fourth goal of the year and second in as many games.
The Tigers will be back on the road this Thursday, October 2, to take on Tulsa at 7:00 p.m. The match will be streamed on ESPN+.
