Memphis Falls in Back-to-Back Games on Saturday

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Memphis softball team dropped back-to-back games Saturday, falling 6-1 to Indiana and 15-5 to Northwestern State. The Tigers (4-23) struggled to capitalize on hitting opportunities throughout the weekend.
"I thought we showed some good stuff, we're getting some better quality starts out of our pitchers and coming up with some key hits when we need to, we keep talking about that." Said head coach Stephanie VanBrakle Prothro. "Softball is simple, pitching and defense win games. We need to continue to do better there and find ways to help ourselves."
Indiana 6, Memphis 1
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Kendall Lee recorded the first hit of the game as she singled to third base in the bottom of the first inning. Lee would be left stranded at first to end the inning.
• Indiana would put up the first run as Copeland hit a homerun to deep center in the top of the second inning. The Hoosiers added two more runs on back-to-back at bats in the inning.
• Neely Taylor tallied a hit for the Tigers in the bottom of the third inning before being picked off on a double play at first base to end the inning.
• The Hoosiers increased their lead with a one-run double to center field by Minnick in the top of the fifth inning.
• Kelsie Adams got on base with a single up the middle in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Tigers would leave Adams on base as a pop fly to the shortstop ended the inning.
• Indiana added two more runs in the top of the seventh inning: Minnick doubled to center field bringing Kern home. Followed by Stone singling to the right field allowing Andrews to score.
• E'mya Munford came up big for the Tigers, hitting a one-run stand up double to get Memphis on the board in the bottom of the seventh inning.
NOTABLES
• Mikayla Hoschak got the start going 3.0 innings and recorded one strikeout. Hallie Siems would relieve Hoschak in the top of the fourth inning. Siems would go 4.0 innings and record three strikeouts.
• Munford went 1-for-3 with one RBI, her third of the season. Lee went 2-for-3 and leads the Tigers with a .344 hitting average.
Northwestern State 15, Memphis 5
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Northwestern State struck first as L Roos singled to center field, bringing Williams in to score in the top of the first inning. The Lady Demons added three more runs before finishing out the inning,
• Meagan Chism smashed a three-run homerun to center field, her second of the season, bringing in Taylor and Lee to cut the deficit to 4-3 in the bottom of the first inning.
• Northwestern State added to its lead as Roos reached home on an error by the shortstop in the top of the second inning. The Lady Demons had back-to-back at bats walked in to add to their lead.
• Northwestern State added five runs on four at bats to increase its lead in the top of the second inning.
• Aliana Zavala scored for the Tigers on a sac fly from Lee in the bottom of the second inning.
• Zoe Adebayo ground out at first with an RBI as Taylor advanced home in the bottom of the fourth inning for the Tigers.
• The Lady Demons widened the gap again as Court grounded out to the shortstop allowing for Chaffin to run home in the top of the fifth inning. Northwestern State added three more runs to close out the inning.
NOTABLES
• Hoschak got the start going 0.1 innings. Rylee Dugar came in as relief in the top of the first inning. Dugar went 1.1 innings and recorded one strikeout.
• Hoschak re-entered the game in the top of the second inning, replacing Dugar. Hoschak went 4.2 innings and recorded three strikeouts.
• Six Tigers recorded hits against the Lady Demons: Taylor Smrt, Presley Morris, Chism, Lee, Ibison and Taylor.
• Chism recorded her second homerun of the season, finishing the game going 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Lee added one run, one RBI and went 2-for-3.
UP NEXT
• The Tigers will host Central Arkansas Tuesday, March 21, at 5 p.m. and the University of Arkansas- Pine Bluff Wednesday, March 22, at 5 p.m. before beginning conference play.
