Tigers Open Weekend at Temple, Friday.
MEMPHIS – The Memphis volleyball team (10-5, 1-1 American) had better get comfortable with life on the road, as the Tigers play six of their next eight matches on the road, starting this weekend with a Friday match-up at Temple and a Sunday match at UConn.
Last year, the Tigers won nine conference road matches en route a 13-7 conference mark. Included in that record were road wins at both Temple and UConn.
Friday night, the Tigers will take on the league's lone unbeaten team after the first weekend of conference play – Temple (11-3, 2-0 American). Temple middle hitter Kirsten Overton was named the American's offensive player of the week last week, hitting .594 with 3.67 kills per set while guiding the Owls to road wins at UCF and USF. Memphis' 3-1 in Philadelphia last year is the Tigers' lone win in the four-game old series with Temple. The two teams will rematch at 7 p.m. (ET).
Sunday, Memphis will travel to Storrs, Conn., to face the Huskies at 1 p.m. (ET). Memphis leads the series, 4-1, including a pair of 3-1 wins against UConn (6-7, 0-2 American) last season. UConn lost a pair of road matches last weekend at UCF and USF and is hoping opening conference play at home this weekend against Cincinnati (Friday) and Memphis (Sunday) helps them snap that streak.
Memphis split a pair of conference matches last week, including a 3-2 win on the road at travel partner Cincinnati on Wednesday. Sophomore outside Oluchi Agomuo was named to the American's weekly honor roll after tying a career high with 19 kills in the road win at Cincinnati then setting a career mark in digs (21) in the loss to East Carolina, Sunday. Agomuo heads in to the weekend just 32 kills shy of her 500th collegiate kill.
Memphis will return home next weekend to host USF, Friday, and preseason favorite UCF, Sunday.
