Softball Opens Home Season with Blues City Classic
Mar 03, 2022 | Softball
MEMPHIS, Tenn.– After opening the 2022 season on the road for three consecutive weekends, the Tigers will come home for the next three weekends in a series of tournaments. Memphis will play host to the Blues City Classic this Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Tiger Softball Complex.
Memphis (5-9) just recently played in The Evangeline Bank and Trust II Invitational hosted by McNeese State. While the Tigers were able to collect wins over UT Arlington and Manahttan College, they would not be able to pull out wins over McNeese State and UNLV to close out the weekend.
Gracie Morton and Camryn Wineinger have been the constant for the Tigers offense with 20 and 15 hits, respectively, and both hitting .375 or better through the first 14 games of the season. Three other Memphis hitters are also giving opposing pitchers trouble; Taylor Smrt, Kendall Lee and Aliana Zavala are all batting .300 or better while Lee, Zavala and Wineinger have all notched homeruns on their statlines.
In the pitcher's circle, Hallie Siems and Mikayla Hoschak have been the go-to's for Coach Natalie Poole. Siems, who leads the team with 32 strikeouts, is currently 4th in the AAC in total strikeouts and had quite the weekend at McNeese State. The sophomore finished the tournament with a 1-1 record and a 1.00 ERA with 18 strikeouts in 14.0 innings of work while keeping her opponents below a .220 BA.
This weekend, Memphis will play host to Butler (8-6), Iowa (9-4), IUPUI (2-12), Indiana State (8-5) and UT Martin (9-5). All games will have live stats available on GoTigersGo.com while coverage of the game against Iowa can be found on ESPN+.
