NEW ORLEANS – University of Memphis quarterback Marcus Stokes was named to the Manning Award Stars of the Week, with the award committee announcing him as the highlighted player on the list on Monday.
Stokes was 29-for-35 through the air, tying his career high in completions while passing for 371 yards and four touchdowns against Army, adding 30 yards and a rushing touchdown to total 401 yards of offense and five touchdowns.
His completion percentage of 82.9 percent was his highest of the season, marking the fourth time this year that he's sat at or above the 80-percent mark. That has led to Stokes being the third-most efficient quarterback in the country while throwing the most touchdown passes of any quarterback at the FBS level.
This season, Stokes has guided the Memphis offense to being ranked fifth nationally (513.3), including the 15th-best scoring offense (37.6), 10th-best rushing offense (222.8) and 11th-ranked passing offense (290.6), all while leading the nation in first downs (227).
The Manning Award was created by the Allstate Sugar Bowl in 2004 to honor the college football accomplishments of Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning. It is the only quarterback award that includes candidates' bowl performances in its balloting.
Since the Manning Award began recognizing Stars of the Week in 2011, 636 different quarterbacks from 139 schools have been recognized.
